Visual artist Shatha Al Hsani presented this work at the Muscat Art Exhibition, bringing together oil painting, executed in a realism, and Augmented Reality (AR) as part of an artistic practice that explores the relationship between fine art, philosophy, and contemporary digital media.
The project reflects Al Hsani’s ongoing pursuit of expanding the language of painting beyond the traditional canvas by integrating interactive technologies as an essential component of the artwork’s conceptual framework.
The work centres on the Akhal-Teke horse, one of the world’s rarest and oldest horse breeds, celebrated for its strength, elegance, and distinctive metallic sheen.
Executed in a realist style, the painting was developed through a meticulous study of anatomy, movement, and light, seeking to create a presence that extends beyond visual representation and conveys vitality and depth.

Within this work, the horse is not presented as a conventional artistic subject, but as an ontological entity whose existence transcends visual representation, becoming a metaphor for humanity’s struggle with the limits of existence.
Its emergence beyond the frame is conceived as a metaphysical act—a refusal to remain confined within the surface of the image or imprisoned in a single moment in time. Instead, it represents the possibility of transcending the boundaries imposed upon the human experience.
The sea, with its darkness, depth, and uncertainty, becomes a symbolic landscape of the collective unconscious, where existential burdens, fears, and obstacles accumulate like restless waves. From within this landscape, the horse’s leap becomes a transformative moment—a second birth, moving from the weight of submersion toward liberation, and from the limitations of the frame into a space that exists beyond both time and place.
The project combines traditional oil painting with Augmented Reality, challenging the conventional boundaries of the painted surface and redefining the relationship between the viewer and the artwork.
Within this context, Augmented Reality is not employed as a technological enhancement, but as an extension of the work’s conceptual structure. The horse departs from the canvas and enters the viewer’s physical space, transforming from a static image into a living presence that moves between the pictorial world and the surrounding reality.
As part of her multidisciplinary artistic practice, Shatha Al Hsani expanded her research into 3D Modelling, Digital Sculpting, Animation, and Augmented Reality, exploring these disciplines as contemporary artistic media capable of extending the expressive possibilities of fine art.
For this project, she developed the three-dimensional horse, designed its movement, and created the complete interactive experience, allowing the digital components to function as an organic extension of the artwork rather than as separate technological elements
The project was presented at the Muscat Art Exhibition, offering an interdisciplinary experience that brought together academic painting, philosophical inquiry, and digital media within a single work of art.
The exhibition reflects Al Hsani’s continuing exploration of contemporary artistic practice through works that move beyond representation to investigate the relationship between reality and metaphor, matter and immateriality, and humanity’s enduring dialogue with the boundaries of existence.
This work represents one of the defining foundations of Shatha Al Hsani’s artistic practice, where realism, conceptual thought, and digital technologies converge to create an experience that extends beyond conventional modes of viewing.
Rather than offering definitive answers, the project presents a philosophical question:
Does the human being remain confined within the frame they have created—shaped by fear, habit, and self-imposed limitations—or do they possess the courage to leap beyond it toward a broader horizon?
